“We must choose our own kneeling places and not have thrust upon us an agenda foreign to our spirits.”
~ Marilyn Sewell, Cries of the Spirit
In the This I Believe course, Patricia Lynn Reilly will guide us to identify what we believe by moving beyond the dogma and catechisms, the handed down beliefs and “thus saith the lords” of our religious pasts.
We will consider the BIG existential questions that rise from our most ancient curiosities with beginner’s mind, heart, and spirit. In the process, our own beliefs will be clarified and we will learn to call upon the resources held within those beliefs in times of confusion, challenge, and celebration.
Using Sylvia Fahs’ words from her piece It Matters What We Believe, we will evaluate our current religious/spiritual beliefs in a safe and supportive circle of women.
Some beliefs are like blinders, shutting off the power to choose one’s own direction.
Other beliefs are like gateways opening wide vistas for exploration.
Some beliefs are like walled gardens.
They encourage exclusiveness, and the feeling of being especially privileged.
Other beliefs are expansive and lead the way into wider and deeper sympathies.
Some beliefs are divisive, separating the saved from the unsaved, friends from enemies.
Other beliefs are bonds in a world community, where sincere differences beautify the pattern.
Some beliefs are rigid, like the body of death, impotent in a changing world.
Other beliefs are pliable, like the young sapling, ever growing with the upward thrust of life.
